Peyton Manning has taken the Vol for Life mantra to heart since leaving the University of Tennessee for the NFL nearly 20 years ago.

He proved that once again on Friday, on the eve of Tennessee’s annual spring game, when he donated $3 million to the university’s football program and to the scholarship named in his honor, according to a report by The Tennessean.

Manning’s scholarship, aptly the Peyton Manning Scholarship, is awarded annually to freshman honors students at the University of Tennessee. The hope is that Manning’s recent donation will allow the university to double the number of scholarships it awards each year from two to four, per the Tennessean’s report.

“We are grateful for the opportunities we have had to give the gift of an education to deserving UT students every year through the scholarship program,” Manning said in a statement to the Tennessean. “It means a great deal to us to give young people an edge in maximizing their potential.”

Manning is slated to attend the Vols’ spring game on Saturday.

“I believe very strongly in the direction in which coach Jones is leading our football program,” Manning added. “There is a great deal of momentum and energy surrounding Tennessee Football right now, and I look forward to what this team will accomplish in the coming years.”
