Here’s what we’re not overreacting to in the SEC after Week 2:

Auburn’s escaping Jacksonville State

No, Auburn’s not deserving of a Top 10 ranking if all circumstances are equal and teams are graded based on how they’ve looked over the first two weeks of the season, but dismissing this squad as a potential SEC threat is premature. The truth is, we don’t know how the Tigers will play against nationally-ranked competition in the SEC and if high-quality teams will bring out their best. Gus Malzahn’s team found themselves in an unexpected dogfight Saturday afternoon and despite losing a fumble inside of the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, didn’t panic and manufactured the necessary scoring drive to force overtime. Let’s not forget what a difference Carl Lawson and Tray Matthews make defensively and tailback Jovon Robinson was banged up too. It could’ve been worse for the Tigers. They could’ve lost to Toledo.

Kentucky ‘has passed South Carolina’ after snapping road skid

The Wildcats’ 26-22 victory in Columbia, S.C. is a tremendous step in the right direction for a program that hadn’t won an SEC road game since 2009, but saying Kentucky has moved ahead of South Carolina in the pecking order’s a bit much. Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio (@KySportsRadio) made that assessment Sunday night and it triggered a multi-tweet exchange between myself, a radio personality in the Palmetto State and others. Kentucky’s win will only mean something if it leads to more this season. The Wildcats beat South Carolina last fall during a 5-1 start before dropping six straight to miss out on the postseason. Largely talent-deprived at this point, the Gamecocks aren’t exactly the cream of the crop in the SEC but 40 wins since the start of the 2011 campaign should be noted. Until Kentucky’s able to beat Florida, Georgia and Tennessee on a regular basis (which South Carolina’s done during Steve Spurrier’s tenure), I’d scale back on the hot takes. Need to see more out of Mark Stoops and Co. On the other hand, it’s going south in a hurry for the Head Ball Coach and Saturday’s game at Georgia, regardless of his prior success vs. Mark Richt, could get ugly with a walk-on starting quarterback facing off with Jeremy Pruitt’s hungry defense.
