While the NCAA’s lift on the short-lived ban of satellite camps has made headlines in recent weeks, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart appears to be more concerned with the lift of regulations on text messaging recruits.
The NCAA had restricted messaging recruits via text but have now allowed coaches to send unlimited text messages to prospective prospects and Smart plans to take advantage of that rule, although Smart noted the recruits are the ones that are most affected by the new ruling.
“I text a lot right now,” Smart said, according to Dawg Nation. “For me it’s not a major change.
“I know if I’m sending (a recruit) 10 texts a day, they’re probably getting times-10 that. That’s 100 and they’re sitting in class. So they’re dealing with the burden, not me. But I don’t mind the rule. I want to take advantage of it and go text as many guys as I can.”
Smart makes a good point here, suggesting recruits could quickly become inundated with messages from potential recruiters on a daily basis now. However, if the NCAA is going to allow it, coaches are going to take every avenue they have to strengthen relationships with their recruits.
While coaches are now free to text away at recruits, they still must observe non-contact periods and can only send messages during contact periods.
