Dan Mullen had a great nine-year run as the Mississippi State head coach, leading the program out of obscurity to national prominence.

However, he is now returning to Florida, where he won two national titles as an assistant on coach Urban Meyer’s staff.

Mississippi State has already found Mullen’s replacement, hiring Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead for the job. On Wednesday, Mullen reached out to the new Bulldogs coach on Twitter to congratulate him on landing the position:

That’s a classy gesture from Mullen, who did some amazing work in Starkville. Fans there shouldn’t fault him for leaving, as he left the program in a great spot.

Whether or not Moorhead can continue the positive momentum Mullen built in Starkville remains to be seen, but he has a star quarterback returning in Nick Fitzgerald and has one of the greatest offensive minds in the country, so it’ll be interesting to see what he can do in 2018.

Meanwhile, Mullen has quite the task ahead of him to rebuild the Florida program that didn’t qualify for a bowl game this season.
