The headlines were writing themselves in the first half, and many media types couldn’t wait to take to Twitter to offer their thoughts.

LSU deserves a lot of credit. So brave. Haven’t trailed all tournament long. What they’re doing without their coach is nothing short of incredible. One of the best teams in the country.

Oops. Those takes that came in around halftime didn’t age well, as the Tigers blew a double-digit lead as the Maryland Terrapins fought their way back to take a 64-62 lead with just under two minutes to play. LSU tied it up at 64-64 with a minute left, thanks to some clutch free throws by Skylar Mays, and then hit a huge three on the next possession to give the Tigers a 67-64 advantage with 32.5 seconds left.

Maryland tied it up again with a clutch three, but then star LSU PG Tremont Waters did what he does best — make big plays. He drove the lane and made his way around three Maryland defenders, lobbing up an impossible underhand shot.

Of course, if you’ve followed Waters at all, you know that nothing is impossible for him. The shot went in and LSU earned the 69-67 victory.

Waters finished with 12 points and five assists. Mays led the team with 16 points.

Now, the Tigers advance to the Sweet 16 to take on the winner of the upcoming Michigan State-Minnesota game. How much further can they advance? With Waters leading the way, anything is possible.
