August Drews was all set to start his career as a Gator in the coming months and work his way up the Florida depth chart as a long snapper and hopefully one day earn a scholarship offer. Well, that offer came earlier than expected, however, it came with another program.

Drews, a native of Sarasota, Fla., was committed to Dan Mullen’s program as a preferred walk-on until Monday. The long snapper/tight end prospect announced his decision to decommit from the Gators with the following message on social media:

“I want to thank Florida for everything they have done for me and the great opportunity they presented me, I feel for me and my family it is best to decommit from the University of Florida and explore other options. I wish the best of luck to Gator Nation!”

Moments later, Drews then announced he had committed to join Appalachian State’s football program after recently landing a scholarship offer to play for the Mountaineers.

You certainly can’t blame a recruit for passing on a walk-on role to accept a full-ride to a program that has had as much success in recent seasons as Appalachian State. However, this news may leave the Gators searching for a new long snapper prospect to add to the program’s 2020 recruiting class a little late in the process.
