It wasn’t a good day at all for New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton.

The former Heisman Trophy winner and national champion at Auburn, brought in as the replacement for franchise great Tom Brady, was benched in the 3rd quarter in favor of another former Tiger, Jarrett Stidham.

Newton’s line before exiting the game? Three interceptions and just 98 yards on 9-of-15 passing, and 5 carries for 19 yards.

Here is his 3rd interception on the day:

Trailing 33-6 to the San Francisco 49ers in the 4th quarter, the Patriots appeared destined to drop to 2-4 on the season. They’ll need to shake off this rough outing from Newton and focus their attention on a 5-2 Buffalo Bills team on Nov. 1 in Orchard Park to avoid going behind the 8-ball even further.

This isn’t what New England envisioned when it signed Newton in the offseason, though, and it’s been a while since Patriots fans have seen such a poor outing from a starting quarterback. And it’s also a game that easily ranks among the more disappointing home performances of the decorated Bill Belichick era.
