Bruce Feldman of The Athletic and FOX Sports has described South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler as one of the more intriguing players in the country to watch in college football this season.

Feldman was a guest on “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama, and shared why the former Heisman Trophy favorite will be closely watched this season.

Feldman recalled that Rattler didn’t have a favorable review among people in college football following his appearance in the Netflix show “QB1: Beyond the Lights.” Rattler was then expected to be the next in a line of Heisman finalists or winners at Oklahoma.

Rattler last summer was a counselor at the Elite 11 camp, and Feldman described how Rattler was like Ari Gold, the fictional character in the HBO TV series “Entourage,” wheeling and dealing marketing and logo deals.

“I think it was a very interesting dynamic,” Feldman said. “There’s a lot of stuff for him to manage, with the expectations, with the hype, with these other obligations. And some of the people we talked with for this story, it was like him against his shadow.”

It was unchartered waters for a lot of people, and to some extent, all that hype and marketing attention “blew up in his face.”

Then, by all indications, Rattler’s been great at South Carolina, and teammates love him, Feldman reported.

“I think he’s been humbled,” Feldman said. “Whatever Spencer says on the record is one thing, but I think the idea of how he comes through this is going to be really interesting. Because he’s certainly talented … but you look at it, after Week 1, they go to Arkansas. Then Week 3, they play the defending national champs. We’re going to find out a lot about Spencer Rattler in a hurry this year.”
