Georgia football player Michael Scullin published an intimate story about his struggles with suicide and depression. He also self-posted the story on the CFB sub-reddit board and interacted with the Reddit community about the topic.

I tried my hardest to cut up my forearm. I tried once. It didn’t leave a mark. I tried twice. I couldn’t. I dropped the knife. Tears of joy ran down my face as I realized the most important thing ever in my life. I put the knife away, not wanting to ever see it again. I went to sleep and woke up being the happiest I had been in nine months. I wasn’t going to let depression affect me ever again. It was time to change it.

Scullin found it difficult pointing to a specific root cause for his depression. Though he was able to acknowledge the many blessings in his life, he still found himself depressed.

There was no reason behind it all. Plain and simple. People say “There had to be something behind it.” There wasn’t. I had everything. I have the best family in the world, great friends and teammates, and I was living a great life in college. I would randomly feel depressed.

Since Scullin felt like he “conquered” his depression, he’s quite optimistic about his present and future. He’s hoping his story will help others who may be struggling with depression or suicide.

Everything is going great for me. I now see the positives of every situation and the outcome. It’s truly amazing how one can feel if they just find the positives through everything. I’m now in the process of building my own app that should be released in the next few months. I was inspired by my depression to create this so that way anyone could find someone to talk to relating to any interest

The topics of depression and suicide are likely not discussed enough, and it can be these very testimonies that help individuals with similar struggles. Scullin was quite courageous in opening up and telling his story, and undoubtedly, someone will read his testimony and be helped as a result. We at SDS wish Scullin the best during his career at Georgia and beyond.

Scullin is a redshirt sophomore playing offensive guard.
