Alabama head coach Nick Saban has made it known that the Tide would be open to getting a tight end transfer due to depth concerns.

Alabama, however, has awarded a scholarship from within.

Walk-on tight end Giles Amos was put on scholarship Tuesday, and Tua Tagovailoa was the first to share the news. Amos is a senior from Perry, Georgia.

Amos hasn’t recorded any stats with Alabama yet, but he has caught a touchdown during a preseason scrimmage, according to reports. He made his first career appearance against Louisiana and saw time against The Citadel last season.

Earlier this offseason, Tide tight end Kedrick James transferred to SMU. Couple that with Irv Smith Jr. and Hale Hentges now in NFL training camps, tight end is one of the biggest concerns for Alabama’s offense. Miller Forristall has the only real experience at the position. Major Tennison is another with very limited experience.

Alabama even moved linebacker Cameron Latu to the position, because he’s athletic enough to handle it.

“We have some guys; we have Major Tennison, we have Miller Forristall, we have Giles Amos,” Tagovailoa said of the tight end position last week during his media availability. “I know not too many of you guys know who these guys are, but I think they’re gonna be a big asset to us this upcoming year.”

Saban also discussed Amos during his media availability.

“Giles has done a good job in taking advantage of the opportunity that he has because of the lack of depth that we have at that position. He’s gotten a lot of repetitions and he’s taken advantage of it.”
