Caleb Downs, a 5-star safety and the No. 1 player at his position, has announced a commitment to play in the SEC.

Downs, who is from Hoschton (Georgia) Mill Creek, committed to Alabama during a segment on CBS Sports HQ in which he initially appeared to pull off a fake out with hats on the table from Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Georgia.

The No. 12 overall prospect per the 247Sports Composite, the 6-foot, 185-pound Downs will play in the All-American Bowl following his senior season.

Downs has been on the national radar for a while. He has racked up 186 tackles as a three-year varsity starter with 33 pass breakups and 14 interceptions. He is a rangy, instinctive playmaker in the secondary.

“His desire for growth,” Mill Creek head coach Josh Lovelady told 247Sports. “What I mean for that, as a teenager at his age, on and off the field, his desire for growth is nothing I’ve seen in 26 years. … He’s an unbelievable competitor. He does not want to lose. What’s great, there are a lot of kids five-stars, four-stars who don’t want to lose, but he’s a teammate that doesn’t want to lose. He’s someone that will take a kid and work with that kid because he knows he can’t do it all. He worries about the little things. He worries about every kid In the program of getting them better.”
