Colin Cowherd has made a living with his unabashed opinions on all things sports, and he’s certainly not afraid to heap criticism on athletes.

On Monday, during an episode of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” on FOX Sports 1, it was New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones who was the target of a Cowherd rant.

Let’s just say that Cowherd isn’t a big fan of the former Alabama star when it comes to his upside as an NFL signal caller.

“Mac Jones, to me, has no play-making ability and has the lowest ceiling,” Cowherd opined when talking about the NFL’s rookie class of quarterbacks. “But, when I watch New England, they remind me of Miami last year. … Am I going to be surprised if Mac Jones wins 10 games? Defense, special teams, they’re going to beat the Jets twice. There’s 2-0. No, I would not be surprised if Mac Jones wins 10 games.”

Cowherd’s rant continued from there, at which point he made it clear that any success the Patriots enjoy in 2021 will be a result of franchise excellence and not what Jones brings to the table.

“I have them winning about 9, but they could go 11-6, and they win with defense, and they don’t turn it over, and they have no penalties” Cowherd continued. “Oh wait, that’s what they’ve always done. I mean, good God, they won 11 games with Matt Cassel one year. Jimmy Garoppolo, every game he ever started in New England, he won. Jacoby Brissett.”

Before moving on to a new subject, Cowherd then doubled down on his assessment of Jones, adding, “Mac Jones, to me, is the least talented (of all the rookie quarterbacks) and could play the most snaps and win the most games this year.”

Jones, who was the 15th pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, completed 13-of-19 passes for 87 yards in his preseason debut with the Patriots, a 22-13 win against Washington last Thursday.

The 6-3, 217-pounder completed 311-of-402 passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and just 4 interceptions in leading Alabama to a 13-0 record and a 52-24 win over Ohio State in the national championship game in 2020.
