Eli Gold has made it clear that Alabama’s change in radio coverage was not a mutual decision.

Crimson Tide Sports Network announced Wednesday that Chris Stewart is the new Alabama radio voice and host of the “Hey Coach!” show. Gold spoke to AL.com’s Michael Casagrande following the announcement.

Gold explained that he had expected to call the A-Day spring game, but CTSN has instead “opted for a clean break.” CTSN has chosen not to renew Gold’s contract but will honor it through its June expiration.

Speaking with Casagrande, Gold said that his health is not keeping him from broadcasting and that he plans to announce his next move in the coming days.

“Well, the university has chosen not to bring me back,” Gold told Casagrande. “This is not, with a capital N-O-T, not at all health-related. I am very healthy. Everything is wonderful. I am healthy as a horse.”

Gold missed the entire 2022 season due to an orthopedic issue. In 2023, he completed cancer treatments before returning to call home games. Gold’s long road back to the booth was the subject of an emotional feature segment on ESPN’s College GameDay.

Gold, 70, has been the voice of the Tide since 1988. He is a 4-time recipient of the Alabama Sportscaster of the Year award. Gold told Casagrande that he plans to continue residing in Birmingham.
