Greg McElroy believes there is a scenario where Alabama could win out and still not make the College Football Playoff.

McElroy believes Alabama has a solid resume with several good wins on its schedule, and he thinks the Tide will make it hard to justify leaving them out of the CFP.

“It’s a hard one to justify because of the perceived strength of the SEC,” McElroy said on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.

But McElroy believes the issue lies in the loss to Texas. The Longhorns are likely going to be the team that Alabama is compared to when deciding who gets the final spot in the CFP.

“You’re gonna end up having a good resume,” McElroy said. “But here’s the problem, you lost the head to head with the team that you’re being judged against.”

McElroy said that the committee will likely have Florida State, the winner of the Pac-12 and the winner of the Big Ten all in the Playoff, which leaves Alabama and Texas as the 2 teams to decide between. He said the only way Alabama will get in over Texas is if the Longhorns drop another game, which doesn’t seem likely.

“The only way Alabama can jump Texas is if Texas loses another game down the stretch,” McElroy said. “And Texas is a heavy favorite against everybody they play remaining on the schedule.”

While McElroy still thinks that Alabama should get in if they run the table, he wants fans to recognize that this is a very realistic scenario.

“People need to understand that this still is a possibility,” McElroy said.
