Jonathan Allen wasn’t the first defensive lineman taken Thursday night in the NFL Draft, but he was the most decorated.
Allen, who helped Alabama win the 2015 national title and reach the 2016 final, was taken No. 17 overall by the Washington Redskins.
As dominant as Alabama’s front four has been under Nick Saban, Allen became just the second defensive lineman selected in the first round in that span. Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus was the No. 3 overall pick in 2011.
Allen left Alabama with 28.5 career sacks, second in program history behind Derrick Thomas.
As a senior, he won the Nagurski, Bednarik and Hendricks awards in addition to being named the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year.
He did all of that despite being overshadowed, publicity-wise, by the splashier Myles Garrett.
Alabama has had at least one first-round pick for nine consecutive years, the longest streak in the SEC.
