Kirk Herbstreit reacted in kind to Caleb Downs’ surprising Friday night decision.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news of Downs’ transfer commitment to Ohio State. A dynamic contributor as a true freshman for Alabama, Downs was rated the top player in the transfer portal per 247 Sports.

At one point, Downs appeared to be trending toward Kirby Smart’s Georgia program. He even received a 247 Sports Crystal Ball for a commitment to the Bulldogs.

In the end, Downs is on his way to Columbus as a massive pickup for Ryan Day. Afterward, Herbstreit shared his reaction to the move on social media.

“Wow! Caleb is super talented but what really stands out is his maturity and intelligence for such a young player,” wrote Herbstreit. “Walked in as a true Fr last year and looked like he’d been there for years. Huge get for the Buckeyes.”

As a true freshman, Downs appeared in all 14 games and led the Crimson Tide with 107 total tackles and 70 solo tackles. He was the SEC’s Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-SEC recipient.
