Nick Saban is reportedly adding a new piece to his Alabama staff as the team prepares for the College Football Playoff matchup against Michigan. That hiring involves a recent assistant to Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.

According to college football insider Bruce Feldman, former Michigan linebackers coach George Helow has been hired by the Crimson Tide. Feldman cited sources who indicated Helow is expected to start work immediately as Alabama preps to face Michigan, where Helow coached from 2021-22.

Helow was Harbaugh’s LBs coach from 2021-22 as the Wolverines embarked on their first of three straight trips to the Playoff. The assistant left Ann Arbor after the 2022 season with the Wolverines bringing back Chris Partridge who has since been dismissed by the program.

Helow does have a previous connection to Saban after serving as a defensive intern for the Tide in 2012. However, his recent connections to Harbaugh’s program are notable.

He served under current UM defensive coordinator Jesse Minter during the 2022 season and will have extensive knowledge of the system of the Wolverines. Feldman also reported Helow’s hiring has “potential” to turn into a full-time opportunity at Alabama once the season ends.
