Nick Saban doesn’t like the idea of the media “creating” a quarterback controversy at Alabama.

While briefly speaking with the media before Tuesday night’s annual Team Focus fundraiser at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center in Mobile, Saban says Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback controversy, and essentially, it’s the media’s creation.

Here’s how the exchange went this evening:

Reporter: “Coach, how do you manage the natural insecurities of two young quarterbacks competing for the position?”

Saban: “We want every player on our team to compete at a high level, and Jalen Hurts played a lot of good football for us last year, and he’s certainly made a lot of progress this spring. Even though all of you in the press are trying to make a quarterback controversy out of nothing, which is what you’re doing right now, there isn’t one. We want both guys to play at a high level, and I think the competition that they offer each other is probably healthy for both and, hopefully, will make both players better players. And we’re just looking forward and feel fortunate to have two outstanding young men that can play at a high level at that position.”

Everyone around the country has been buzzing about Tua Tagovailoa’s spring game. The young gunslinger finished 17-of-29 for 313 yards with three touchdowns during A-Day, and initial impressions are that he may be too good to keep off the field. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll eventually beat out Jalen Hurts as the starter, but Tagovailoa could make an impact as a backup, much like Tim Tebow did during his freshman season (2006) with Chris Leak the starter. The Gators used both quarterbacks and eventually won the national championship.

The reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Hurts, is the starter. Everyone knows that, but with such a talented youngster pushing him, he’ll have a little more pressure on him to perform in 2017. That’s probably fine, because he’s a cool customer under pressure.
