We’ve known for several weeks that Eli Gold would be joined by a new color commentator following Phil Savage’s departure from the Crimson Tide Sports Network but until now, the name of that replacement was not known.

Alabama has named John Parker Wilson as the team’s new color commentator, a move that was first reported by Cecil Hurts of TideSports. Rashad Johnson, also a former Alabama player, has been named as the new sideline reporter for Alabama games.

Wilson, an Alabama native, played for the Crimson Tide from 2005 to 2008. By the time his playing career had come to an end, Wilson held nearly every meaningful passing record in school history. Following his collegiate career, Wilson went on to play three seasons in the NFL with Atlanta and Pittsburgh.

“We are excited to add John  Parker Wilson and Rashad Johnson to our broadcast team, which allows us to promote Chris Stewart to broadcast host,” Jim Carabin, vice president & general manager of Crimson Tide Sports Marketing, said in a prepared statement. “The addition of Wilson and Johnson will bring a lot of energy to the broadcast, while their knowledge of the game, and Alabama football in particular, will provide great insight for our listeners.”

You may recall Nick Saban invited Wilson back to practice last season in order to help the ‘Bama defense better prepare for former LSU quarterback Danny Etling in practice. That method, not the first time Alabama had done it, created some waves across the nation and is now prohibited by the NCAA following a recent rule change.

Now the NCAA may soon have to ban broadcast members from helping prep teams in practice with Wilson joining the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
