Thought to be an offensive coordinator candidate in the NFL this offseason, with those plans falling through, Jake Peetz is making a return to Tuscaloosa instead.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the former Oakland quarterback coach has been hired as an analyst by Nick Saban. Peetz worked with Raiders QB Derek Carr last season but became expendable following the hire of Jon Gruden.

Peetz was expected to be Josh McDaniel’s offensive coordinator in Indianapolis, according to Scott Horner of the Indy Star, before the Patriots’ OC decided to remain in New England instead of leave for the Colts. Peetz worked for Saban as an analyst back in 2013.

Here’s Rapoport’s report on the hire:

While Saban must have a high regard for Peetz, the feeling is quite mutual. Here’s what Alabama’s new analyst has said about the Crimson Tide coach in the past, according to Horner:

“People ask me the secret to coach (Nick) Saban. I tell them it’s so simple that you’re not even going to write it down, and you’re going to think I’m hiding something from you,” Peetz said.

“It’s this: Everybody has a defined role and expectation, and you’re held accountable to that. That’s what it is to the nth degree. Your role is defined. You’re going to have a very high expectation, and you will be held accountable, and you’re going to be given every opportunity to succeed.

“I think I’ll look back at that experience, working for coach Saban, as the defining moment in my learning and my understanding — and being pushed to the limit.”
