Shane Gillis calls Nick Saban ‘Alabama Jones’ in hilarious GameDay back-and-forth
Shane Gillis joined the College GameDay crew in South Bend as the guest picker ahead of the Indiana-Notre Dame first-round matchup. Gillis is a comedian who’s been known to ruffle feathers, and one of the GameDay hosts found that out firsthand on Friday night.
Gillis implied that Nick Saban was a “cheater” as the head coach at Alabama. The comedian then said he was joking, and asked if GameDay was a “fun show” or a “serious show.” Nick Saban was clearly annoyed by Gillis’ joke, so the comedian poked fun at the legendary coach’s outfit.
“Alabama Jones is very serious,” joked Gillis, poking fun at Saban’s hat. Of course, Gillis was referring to the classic Indiana Jones character played by Harrison Ford, who’s known for wearing a brown hat similar to Saban’s.
Saban chose to ignore the joke and instead went on to defend his coaching style.
“I do believe in integrity,” said Saban. “I always tried to run the program that way so players had a better chance to be successful in life.”
Saban then mentioned that Alabama players have made more money in the NFL than any other school before spilling the details of how he “cheated.”
“That was how we cheated,” said Saban. “We developed players.”
This passionate response caused Gillis to say he was “so sorry” for causing Saban to go off and defend himself. The coach has had some hilarious moments in his own right this year, but he clearly doesn’t think being called a cheater is a laughing matter.
