Alabama fans aren’t going to want to hear it, but Ryan Leaf may have a point when it comes to why Tua Tagovailoa won’t be viewed as a success in the NFL.

The former No. 2 overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft has shared his opinion before that Tua Tagovailoa isn’t a top 5 overall quarterback prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft and explained his rationale during a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” which can be seen below.

“I hope I’m wrong I just don’t, I don’t feel like [Tagovailoa being a success in the NFL is] going to be the case,” Leaf shared during his appearance on the show. “I think that in terms of what you consider success, right? You look at the last 20 years, the top five draft picks at quarterback, only one has won a Super Bowl – he won multiple ones, but only one quarterback.

“So if you’re talking about Tua in the top five, that’s what success is, to win a championship. And if you’re not doing that, I don’t know what that looks like. I don’t think he has the ability to transition to the next level and be as successful as let’s say a Joe Burrow or a Justin Herbert. It’s just how I feel. The amount of film I’ve watched, it doesn’t necessarily reinforce that thought, it just keeps me a little off-putting in terms of what he can do without the same kind of talent he had at Alabama.”

While Leaf may be questioning Tagovailoa’s ability to translate to the NFL level, he could still be wrong and prove to be right based on the criteria he lays out above.

The NFL is littered with quarterbacks that were drafted in the first round and a solid majority fail to live up to the hype — especially when it comes to winning a championship as Leaf notes below.
