For most of the season, it seemed like Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was going to run away with the Heisman Trophy.

But in the week leading up to the trophy presentation, the race appears to be closer than ever.

That’s according to ESPN’s Heisman Trophy Watch, whose Monday update put Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray slightly ahead of Tagovailoa. ESPN’s 10-person panel awarded Murray 46 points and six first-place votes, while Tagovailoa garnered 44 points and the remaining four first-place nods.

Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and West Virginia’s Will Grier were distant contenders in the ESPN poll, making the push for the Heisman Trophy a two-horse race over the final week.

Murray left an unquestionably better taste in voters’ mouths, completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 379 yards and three touchdowns as No. 4 Oklahoma took down Texas in the Big 12 title game.

Tagovailoa, meanwhile, battled through an obvious limp to complete just 10 of 25 passes for 164 yards, one score and two interceptions in the SEC Championship Game. He left the game with an injury in the fourth quarter and watched as backup Jalen Hurts engineered an incredible comeback victory against No. 5 Georgia.

The two Heisman contenders are expected to face off in the College Football Playoff semifinal Dec. 29, but only one of them can claim the trophy on Saturday night.
