The seat under Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema is starting to get a bit toasty.

In four seasons, Bielema has gone 25-26 as the Razorbacks’ head coach — including a 10-22 conference record. Arkansas finished No. 76 this past year in total defense. There were many times in which the defense simply couldn’t get a stop. It truly prevented the team from taking the next step in becoming a threat within the SEC West.

Sensing the tangible pressure surrounding his job, Bielema opted to make a change. Defensive coordinator Robb Smith and Bielema decided on a mutual parting of ways. Smith ended up ultimately at Minnesota.

Bielema then decided to promote defensive backs coach Paul Rhoads to the defensive coordinator spot.

Introducing Rhoads on Saturday, Bielema divulged something about the scheme going forward:

The Razorbacks will switch from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4 look. In theory, it will enable the linebackers to attack the line of scrimmage aggressively. It also allows Arkansas to get more speed on the field.

Interestingly enough, Bielema enlisted the help of former Notre Dame — and current Nebraska — defensive coordinator Bob Diaco:

Heading into his fifth season, there’s no question the fan base is getting restless with the results — or lack thereof. It appears as if Bielema is willing to explore all options when trying to improve the prospects of his program.
