One of the storylines of fall camp at Arkansas has been QB KJ Jefferson’s goal to start the season at 235 pounds, meaning he would need to lose between 10 and 15 pounds.

But offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is not concerned about the weight of his quarterback. Briles said he’s told Jefferson that he thinks 235 is the best weight for Jefferson.

“He can run, he can move, he’s got a first step, I’m not really concerned with it,” Briles told reporters on Friday. “A lot of times there’s wants and there’s needs, we need him to be really, really good. I don’t care if he’s 285 as long as he’s dropping dimes on people. … I like where he’s at, he feels comfortable. He knows I would like him to be a little bit less, but dad-gum, he’s a big kid, he’s going to be tough to bring down.”

Briles said Jefferson has worked this fall camp on his mobility and accuracy.

“I really like where he’s at from a practice standpoint with his accuracy,” Briles said, and added that a goal for Jefferson is to hit over 65 percent accuracy.

Even though Arkansas is starting a new quarterback in Jefferson, he has some experience. He takes over for Feleipe Franks, and the coaching staff felt confident enough in him to name him the starter in the spring.

He may be most remembered last season for a career-high 274 passing yards and 3 touchdown passes during a 50-48 loss at Missouri. In 5 games last season, he completed 20 of 41 passes for 295 yards.
