The Michigan State Spartans have had a number of coaches withdraw their names from the search to replace Mark Dantonio.

Now, as the search wears on, a trio of former SEC coaches — Butch Jones, Bret Bielema and Jim McElwain — are reportedly in the mix to land the Spartans’ job.

On Tuesday, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum came out strongly against the Spartans hiring Bielema (via 247Sports):

“It’s hard to imagine it being any more embarrassing,” Finebaum said. “And the newest name to surface is Bret Bielema — remember the guy that used to be at Wisconsin? And Arkansas.”

Finebaum was just getting started, though. He went on to say Bielema’s tenure at Arkansas was a disaster:

“No,” Finebaum said, regarding if MSU should pursue Bielema, who went 29-34 overall and 11-29 against SEC play in five years on the job with the Razorbacks. “I think he was a disaster at Arkansas. He was stubborn. He made countless mistakes. And putting him in that situation I think excites absolutely nobody.”

Still, the longer this search goes on, the more likely it may become that Bielema lands the job. We’ll see what happens as Michigan State keeps looking for its new coach.
