The Arkansas Razorbacks reportedly have their new head coach in SMU’s Chad Morris, as a hire was reported on Tuesday evening.

Now, Morris will have to assemble his coaching staff, and he’s expected to target a big-name defensive coordinator in Clemson’s Brent Venables.

Morris served as Clemson’s offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014, working with Venables from 2012 to 2014. According to FootballScoop.com, Morris is going to target his former colleague for the Hogs’ defensive coordinator spot:

Sources tell us to expect Morris to target Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables for his defensive coordinator spot on staff. If Morris could land Venables, it would be huge news in the coaching world.

Naturally, “targeting” and “hiring” are two very different things, as every school with a defensive coordinator opening should be “targeting” Venables.

Whether he’d actually leave Clemson, a team in the national title hunt on a yearly basis, to join a team that has a rebuilding project ahead of it remains to be seen, but this is certainly an eyebrow-raising rumor.
