Auburn will have an interim head coach during fall camp. After Bryan Harsin’s positive test for COVID-19, Jeff Schmedding is stepping in as the “in-person” head coach. In his statement to the media, Harsin says he will continue to participate remotely in meetings and practice.

Schmedding’s titles at Auburn are assistant head coach, linebackers coach defensive run game Coordinator. Schmedding followed Harsin from Boise State, where he was the team’s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Harsin named former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason as his Auburn defensive coordinator.

Prior to his time at Boise State, Schmedding spent 15 seasons at FCS program Eastern Washington. In 2018, Schmedding’s Eagles’ defense was first in the FCS in defensive touchdowns scored and second in forced turnovers.

Schmedding served as EWU’s defensive coordinator from 2015-18, while he also coached safeties and rovers. Before he was defensive coordinator, Schmedding spent seven seasons (2008-14) as the Eagles’ special teams coordinator, coaching linebackers (2008-09), safeties and nickels (2010-14) during that time.

Auburn’s season kicks off in just over two weeks against Akron.
