Though Auburn RB Kerryon Johnson did more than enough for the Tigers’ running game in a blowout 51-14 win over Mizzou on Saturday night — rushing for an incredible five touchdowns — there was one noticeable absence from the game plan.

Kamryn Pettway didn’t see any action against Mizzou, even though he was dressed and on the sideline, leading to speculation on what his situation was.

After the game, coach Gus Malzahn said Pettway wasn’t at 100 percent after suffering an ankle injury in last week’s win over Mercer (via AL.com):

“He wasn’t 100 percent,” Malzahn said. “It was kind of one of those deals that if he wasn’t going to be 100 percent we were going to go with the other guys that were. We’ll see how he is this week.”

Indeed, Pettway’s left ankle was heavily taped as he went through warmups. Once it became clear the Tigers wouldn’t need him to beat Mizzou, he received a much-needed night off.

Johnson and Kam Martin (who ran for 74 yards) adequately filled in for Pettway, letting him rest up for next week’s tough game against Mississippi State.
