Auburn recently announced it had reached an agreement to host UMass in 2020 but the contract details were not released when the game was announced Thursday. According to a report out of New England, the Tigers will pay a record price to host the Minutemen.

In order to land the third member of its 2020 non-conference slate, Auburn is set to pay UMass $1.9 million dollars according to Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette. That figure will tie the mark for the most money handed out for a single game between two FBS schools without extenuating circumstances.

The $1.9 million figure will tie Georgia’s payout to Kent State for traveling to Athens in 2022.

The two other games that involved larger payouts: Florida paid Colorada State $2 million for a 2018 game but that figure was only agreed upon after the Rams lost head coach Jim McElwain to the Gators. Nebraska also paid $2.125 million to Southern Miss in 2013 but that was after the Cornhuskers asked for the location of the game to be changed.

Anyway you slice it, the price of scheduling continues to grow with no end in sight. It likely won’t be long before the $2 million dollar mark is broken by a Power 5 school in need of completing its future schedule.
