Auburn is expected to hire a new special teams coordinator for the 2025 season, according to a report.

That’s per 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, who notes that Chad Lunsford is Auburn’s target for the role. Lunsford most recently served as an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic and was previously the head coach at Georgia Southern, amongst other roles.

Lunsford does have some previous ties to Auburn. While he wasn’t a member of the coaching staff, he served as Auburn’s director of scouting from 2009-12 before moving on to Georgia Southern.

Lunsford also served as FAU’s interim head coach at the end of the 2024 season. The Owls went 1-1 during his brief time at the helm to close out the year.

Auburn is hoping to take a big step forward on special teams next season. The Tigers finished the 2024 season ranked 84th nationally in special teams SP+, according to ESPN. That’s a key area where the Tigers can improve going into 2025.

Previously, Auburn’s special teams were led by Tanner Burns. He was Auburn’s special teams coordinator last season, but in an off-field role.

Hugh Freeze and the Tigers have not yet confirmed this hire.
