In his two seasons as head coach at Auburn, Gus Malzahn has endured his share of carousel rumors, highlighted by the reports following the 2013 season that the NFL’s Cleveland Browns were interested in Malzahn.

Now, after a disappointing 8-5 season on the Plains, the rumors are ramping up again.

Bleacher Report NFL Draft analyst Curt Popejoy did not report, but tweeted he’d received an interesting text message from a friend regarding Gus Malzahn.

This is not a report citing sources such as FootballScoop.com or CoachingSearch.com or any respected coaching outlet. Nor is it an NFL insider or reporter who covers the 49ers, Popejoy is just relaying a piece of information he’d received from a friend.

Last month NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Malzahn would likely receive some NFL looks from such franchises like the Miami Dolphins.

SBNation’s 49ers website, Niners Nation, took Popejoy’s statement and wrote a piece on why Malzahn would be a great fit in the Bay Area, but it does not suggest anything serious.

Could the 49ers be interested in or target Malzahn? It seems likely, seeing as he’s been connected to NFL openings in the past.

At this point, it’s nothing more than conjecture. Auburn fans should not yet be concerned with what is nothing more than a series of tweets. Malzahn told reporters late in the season that he felt the college game was a better fit for him at this point in his career.

“Growing up, obviously, huge Dallas Cowboys fan,” Malzahn told AL.com in November. “Any time you can be associated with them that would be a pretty cool deal, but as you get older, this college football really fits me well, especially at a place like Auburn. Auburn allows me to be who I am and I’m so happy being here. We’ve got a bright future. I think the best is yet to come here.”
