Longtime announcer Verne Lundquist names the greatest SEC football game he's ever seen
During his time working as an announcer for CBS, Verne Lundquist saw a ton of SEC football games over the years but when asked recently which game was the best he’d ever seen, the former “SEC on CBS” announcer didn’t take long to make his selection.
No surprise, the Kick Six was his answer.
The 2013 Iron Bowl pitted two top-four rivals against each other in arguably the greatest finish in college football history thanks to Auburn’s Chris Davis’ 109-yard return of Alabama kicker Adam Griffith’s missed attempt with one second remaining on the clock.
Entering the game, the Crimson Tide had not lost a game all season while Auburn had just one loss on the season. The win propelled the Tigers to the SEC Championship Game and eventually a national championship berth against Florida State.
During a recent appearance on WNSP-FM 105.5 radio show “The Opening Kickoff,” here’s how Lundquist responded when asked to name the best SEC game he’d ever seen (transcription of Lundquist’s comments comes via Mark Heim of AL.com):
“Easy, easy, easy. Alabama-Auburn 2013. The Iron Bowl. That one was a no-brainer for me. We did Georgia-Auburn two weeks before that. Auburn had lost once earlier in the season to LSU. They went on a tear. We were doing the game in Auburn. Georgia led with less than a minute to go. Nick Marshall and Auburn had a 4th and 18 and they did a Hail Mary. Two Georgia defenders went up. Instead of knocking the ball down – it was fourth down for crying out loud – one tipped it to the hands of Ricardo Lewis. He made a heck of a catch.
“On the air, Gary said “This is the greatest finish I have ever seen in any college football game in my life. You’ll never see anything better.”
“Well, it took us two weeks. Then, we had the Chris Davis return of a missed field goal 109 yards. That whole game was No. 1 vs. No. 4. It is the most bitter rivalry in all of college athletics, in my view. I know Ohio State and Michigan argue their case, so does Texas-Oklahoma and USC-UCLA out west. There is nothing compared to the passion for Alabama and Auburn.”
Here’s the classic ending to the game, featuring Lundquist on the call for CBS.
You probably have seen this 100 times by now but it never gets old. Well, unless you are an Alabama fan.
