R. C. Slocum coached the Texas A&M football program for 14 seasons from 1989-2002, leading the Aggies to 123 wins and 11 bowl games in that time. He served as an assistant at A&M for nine seasons from 1972-1980, and after one year at USC he returned to College Station for seven more seasons as defensive coordinator from 1982-1988. Slocum took over as head coach in 1989, leading A&M to an 8-4 record and a loss in the Sun Bowl. His teams posted four straight 10-win seasons from 1991-1994 and won three straight conference titles during that run (from 1991-93). Those three conference championship teams were a perfect 22-0 against conference opponents, although all three teams ended their seasons with losses in the Cotton Bowl.

Texas A&M moved from the Southwest Conference to the Big 12 prior to the 1996 season, and Slocum would coach the Aggies in the Big 12 for seven seasons. His 1997 team won the Big 12 South division crown, and in 1998 his team won the conference title with an 11-3 record. All in all, Slocum had 10 teams finished ranked in the final Associated Press polls, including three top-10 teams. He was just 3-8 in bowl games with the Aggies before retiring from coaching in 2002. Slocum was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
