Caitlin Clark is officially the most prolific scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history.

On Thursday night, during No. 4 Iowa’s game against Michigan, Clark passed Washington’s Kelsey Plum (3,527 points) to become the all-time women’s Division I leader for career points. The fourth-year senior guard entered Thursday’s game just eight points away from the record, and she secured it as quickly as possible. Clark scored the first eight points of the game for the Hawkeyes, officially breaking the record on a fast-break 3-pointer just two minutes and 12 seconds into the game.

The Clark show has been an entertaining one since she arrived in Iowa City. She’s the first D1 player to record 3,300 points, 1,000 assists, and 850 rebounds in a career. Over the last 25 years, no player — man or woman — has more 30-point performances than Clark (52). During the same time frame, Clark has gone for 30 points and 10 assists 17 times; no other woman has more than two.

In leading the Hawkeyes to their first Final Four three decades last season, Clark became the first player in NCAA Division I history with 900 points and 300 assists in a season. As a result, she swept every national player of the year award.

And she’s on pace to do the same this season thanks to another historic campaign. Clark entered Thursday’s matchup with the Wolverines averaging 32.1 points per game this season. She not only leads all D1 players in scoring, but is also averaging a nation-leading 8.3 assists and connecting on a nation-leading 5.2 triples per game.

For last Sunday’s game against Nebraska, 1.77 million viewers tuned in to watch Clark try and break the record. It was the most-watched women’s basketball game in FOX Sports history, and the second-most-watched game on any network this season. The No. 1 spot was taken by an Iowa game as well.

Iowa’s home games are all sold out this season. The Hawkeyes hosted one of their exhibition games this season inside the football stadium — a first in women’s college basketball — and drew 55,646 fans. The average price on the secondary market for a ticket to Thursday’s Michigan-Iowa contest was nearly $400.

“I’m excited. It’s going to be a very special night,” Clark said before the game. “I’m not anxious about it at all. We haven’t really talked a lot about it as a team. It’s just go out there and play basketball and have fun, and this is kind of what comes along with it.”

All-time scoring records, though, are reserved for generational talents. Clark is already viewed as one of the game’s greats. Now, she’s got one more jewel to add to the crown.
