The SEC is recognizing Tennessee’s Zakai Zeigler and Alabama’s Labaron Philon as the conference’s Players of the Week.

Tennessee had one outing during the holiday week, taking care of Middle Tennessee 82-64 on Dec. 23. Zeigler, a 5-9, 172-pound senior guard, led the way in the victory. Zeigler had a double-double of 17 points and 15 assists, adding 4 rebounds. The assist mark is a career-high for Zeigler, and the most by a Volunteer since Feb. 28, 1987 and the most by an SEC player in a nonconference game since Nov. 15, 2019. Zeigler’s the first SEC player of the last 20 seasons to score at least 15 points and record 15 assists.

Tennessee improved to 13-0 with the win and remained No. 1 in the latest AP Top 25. The Vols play Norfolk State on Tuesday afternoon.

Alabama got in its last pre-conference tuneup in on Sunday, picking up a 105-82 win in Tuscaloosa over South Dakota State. Philon had a season-high 21 points in the win. He added 6 assists and 5 rebounds, shooting 57.1% from the field (8-of-14), adding 3 free throws at the line.

Next up for No. 5 Alabama is a clash with No. 12 Oklahoma, one of the nation’s four remaining undefeated teams.
