ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky thinks Ryan Day, Marcus Freeman could draw NFL interest

ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky thinks Steve Sarkisian may not be the only head coach in the College Football Playoff to draw interest from NFL teams.
On Sunday, Adam Schefter shared that he expected Sarkisian to hear from NFL teams interested in hiring the Texas head coach who previously coached in the pros as an offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte dismissed the report as “fodder” before the College Football Playoff semifinal.
On Thursday’s Get Up, Dan Orlovsky suggested that NFL teams may look at other CFP coaches.
“I think many teams in the NFL are going to want to talk to some of the college football coaches in the College Football Playoff that are left if they lose,” Orlovsky said.
“I don’t think it’s just Sark. I think teams and the Cowboys could want to talk to Ryan Day. I think they could want to talk to Marcus Freeman. The way the NFL is going is trending a little bit toward the younger coach.”

Day, 45, has been the Ohio State head coach since 2019. He has some NFL familiarity as quarterbacks coach under Chip Kelly with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers in 2015 and ’16. He returned to the college ranks in 2017, joining Urban Meyer’s OSU staff.
Day has a 68-10 record as the head coach of the Buckeyes, but has faced heat for 4 consecutive losses to Michigan. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork addressed Day’s future after The Game and Urban Meyer shot down rumors of a return to the Buckeyes.
Freeman turns 39 on Friday. He is 32-9 as a head coach at Notre Dame, and recently received a contract extension. He was a fifth-round NFL Draft pick in 2009, but retired in 2010 due to an enlarged heart condition. Freeman has only coached at the college level.
