Matthew Downing is getting another shot to quarterback a Power 5 program. The Georgia walk-on and transfer to TCU will be the starter this week for the Horned Frogs against Iowa State.

Downing played in four games for Georgia in 2018, which preserved a redshirt season. He appeared in limited action against Austin Peay, Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee and UMass. Downing then transferred to TCU and redshirted last season so the 6-foot, 205-pound Alpharetta, Georgia native is listed as a sophomore.

Downing will start, but coach Gary Patterson said Max Duggan and Stephon Brown are both expected to be available at QB for TCU, Drew Davison of the Star Telegram reported.

This is the season opener for TCU, which had a game against SMU, which was scheduled for Sept. 11, postponed.

The Horned Frogs have juggled quarterbacks all preseason. Downing missed about 10 days for undisclosed reasons, and Duggan was sidelined indefinitely with a heart condition discovered through enhanced COVID-19 testing protocols. He has recently returned to practice.

About a week ago, Patterson sent out a tweet to try to calm everyone down about the QBs.
