The College Football Playoff semifinalists will be announced early Sunday afternoon.

In advance of the CFP Selection Show, ESPN analysts Kirk Herbstreit was asked for his take on the state of college football heading into the postseason.

Herbstreit, like many others, admitted that he couldn’t help but be impressed by the showing that Alabama put together in its 41-24 win over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

“I think Alabama made a really loud statement with their performance,” Herbstreit said while appearing on NFL Countdown on Sunday morning. “Alabama has not been the team that they were yesterday, and Georgia has been. And that’s why we play college football. You kind of expect the unexpected, and it was a dominating performance.

“You gotta give Bryce Young credit. He probably secured the Heisman Trophy and also knocked of Georgia. Also, I think it will put Alabama back to where they’re used to being — the top team in the country as we get ready for the announcement later today. I don’t know that, but that’s my feeling.”

As for how the rest of the CFP teams might be seeded, Herbstreit then turned his attention to Michigan, which he said also has an outside shot at the No. 1 seed..

“Michigan, based on what they’ve done, very very strong performance yesterday in Indianapolis against Iowa, 42-3,” Herbstreit said. “If there’s anything we’re waiting to see — will Michigan go up to No. 1 or will Alabama, after they knocked off Georgia, go to No. 1? My guess is that Alabama after that dominating performance against that Georgia team will be the top team.”
