Matt Barrie couldn’t even pretend to enjoy his mayonnaise-covered ice cream treat. After about a second of tasting the absurd combo, the veteran ESPN host grabbed a nearby trash can and yakked.

During Friday night’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl game between Minnesota and Virginia Tech, Barrie and his broadcast partner, Aaron Murray, sampled various… uh… delicacies that featured mayonnaise from the bowl’s presenting sponsor. At first, the 2 tried a mayo and banana sandwich. Early in the second quarter, they dipped chocolate-covered ice cream bars in mayo and hilarity ensued.

“It really is not bad,” Murray protested.

“What is your problem?” Barrie shot back.

“I kind of like it,” Murray responded. “I love ice cream so much.”

While Virginia Tech was running a second-down play, the in-game commentary ground to a halt as Barrie presumably tried to keep himself from hurling. The camera cut away from the broadcast booth and back to the field, but all viewers at home could hear was retching.

You’ve gotta respect the commitment to the bit. Barrie joked at one point that his contract was due up soon and asked his bosses to remember his on-air sacrifices for the sake of bowl content.

Here’s the mayo-banana sandwich bit:

While plenty was made about the expanded College Football Playoff harming the traditional bowl season, the 2024 postseason has actually brought us nonstop enjoyment. A number of games have been wildly entertaining. The Pop-Tarts Bowl has become an icon. And we haven’t even seen a coach take a mayo bath yet.

Gotta love bowl season.
