Tate Martell has had a unique journey since the start of his college football career.

First, Martell spent 2 years at Ohio State. He then decided to transfer to Miami ahead of the 2019 season. While with the Hurricanes, he switched from quarterback to wide receiver back to quarterback. And then, he was suspended by the team for the 2020 opener, before he decided to opt out of the rest of the season.

Now, Martell is getting another fresh start at UNLV, where he transferred earlier this year. However, it’s unclear what his status with the team currently is. That’s because the Rebels released their Week 1 depth chart on Monday, with Martell noticeably not included.

UNLV announced that either sophomore Doug Brumfield or sophomore Justin Rogers will be its starting QB, with freshman Cameron Friel serving as the third-string quarterback.

As recently as a week ago, Martell seemed to be excited for his future at UNLV. He praised the Rebels for giving him an opportunity to continue his college career in a TikTok post.

“The schools I was talking to randomly stopped talking to me once I told them I had surgery on my thumb,” Martell wrote in the TikTok post. “I hit rock bottom about a year ago and was going to quit football. Decided one random day to leave Miami and come home and train. Dedicated all my time to graduating, getting in the best shape of my life and changing myself as a person.

“Then two months ago I had surgery on my thumb, thought everything I worked to become was for nothing. UNLV still gave me the opportunity to play for them. I’m extremely grateful. I’m continuing to recover from surgery and work everyday with my teammates.”

Perhaps Martell will still make an impact for the Rebels, but it just won’t be at the start of the season.

Martell has yet to get many opportunities in his college career. In 2018, he went 23-for-28 for 269 yards and 1 touchdown in 6 game for Ohio State. And he threw only 1 pass during his time at Miami.
