Florida, Georgia fans battling it out on Twitter following Brenton Cox transfer news
If you missed the news, Brenton Cox is officially a Gator just days after he left Kirby Smart’s Georgia program.
The move happened so fast, Georgia had not even publicly addressed Cox leaving the program before he arrived in Gainesville ready for the upcoming Florida training camp practice.
Cox appeared in 11 games for the Bulldogs during his true freshman season, registering 20 tackles and one sack in 2018. He will wear No. 6 for the Gators.
As you could imagine, the immediate reaction to the news has been pretty divided online.
Here is a sampling of some of the comments after Cox was officially introduced by the Gators:
Georgia supporters:

WHAT … A … STEAL for @GatorsFB!!! Unfortunately though, he has to sit out the 2019 or 2020 season pending a waiver. Staying in the SEC East: Brenton Cox makes transfer decision https://t.co/IrAgMRIzhl

Any anger on Twitter is misplaced. The kid was buried on the third string looking up at two true freshman. He had problems with the hard coaching Dan Lanning gave him. He made a decision he thought could best help him.
Wish him the best of luck and be done with it. And remember that running wide to his side of the field will yield big yards, as Texas found out in the Sugar Bowl. ♂️
“He had problems with the hard coaching Dan Lanning gave him?” And the Texas game shade?
I don’t think “wish him the best of luck” means what you think it means.
There’s little evidence indicating that he was “buried” on the depth chart. He was probably the 3rd-ish option for a purely pass-rushing 3rd down situation, but he was still the most experienced OLB in that room along with Walter Grant and one of the biggest, too–essential factors for stopping the run in the SEC.
I’m disappointed he would transfer to a rival program like Florida, but I’m not going to lie–it’s a great situation for him to step into–not a lot of competition, and he’ll get all the blitz-work he wants. I wish him luck, just not on TWLOCP Day.
Too slow and undisciplined. Could not contain the wide side of the field and simply didn’t understand the scheme.
While it was a loss for UGA it wasn’t season defining due to that being a position of strength. Good player with a lot of potential but a manageable loss. But him going to Florida changes that narrative. It is one thing to get a little weaker on the field but something different when it makes your opponent stronger. This was a good get for Florida. They should be happy with it.
I have no issue with guys going from one team to another within the same conference. UGA picked up the TE from Tennessee and the Star from Alabama. I get they were grad transfers but still.
Even if Cox never became a starter at UGA he was a great depth piece, saw the field a lot as a freshman and would have seen his playing time increase.
Now to see if he is eligible to play this season or if he has to wait.
Nice to see a Dawg fan be respectable about it. Corch should take notes on how not to be. Funny how quickly he changed his tune from not too long ago when Cox committed to UGA.
You mistakenly said “Dawg fan” and “Corch” without a negative disclaimer.
Can’t fault a kid from trying to maximize his opportunities. Good luck to him (except for one game a year).
Welp, we have a five star on the roster again…smh.
Y’all certainly do right now. Not sure for how long, who’s he rooming with? …lol
I wish Cox well. Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to bring out the best in young players…
Roommates, cellmates. Sometimes its hard to tell the difference in the Swamp.
Hey, that’s really funny.
Every day it becomes more obvious that Dan Mullen still has some of that Urban Meyer stink on him. His next move will prob be to hire Zach Smith as the team’s life coach.
Cox was running third team and was about the 6th or 7th person at his position on the depth chart Lazy and always out of position. Absolutely sucked in the post season last year. For UGA this is addition by subtraction if a player who wasnt going to play a lot.
Actually, addition by subtraction would be more like when you hired away Charlton Warren and we replaced him with Torrian Gray, AND then got Kaiir Elam too.
Oh yeah, Fla has had an awesome offseason. Please keep up the good work.
That’s to much math for him Nashville
We actually wanted one of your felony weapons possession guys, as the Gators are planning some bank robberies. But there weren’t any available in the transfer portal.
History has proven if Fla fans are looking for a felon, they can always find a few in their locker room or their on the rolls of the Gator Alumni Association/ Penitentiary Division.Lots of choices.
Yes. UF is an absolutely terrible school. Which is sort of weird, when you consider that the average UGA student couldn’t get accepted into Florida. Just another of life’s strange paradoxes.
Is there anything more pathetic than a Gator fan resorting to academic comparisons as the only defense against mediocrity? Sounds like a Tech fan the Sunday after Thanksgiving. How far the once mighty have fallen. So sad
Does anything at UGA win? If you want to see a top all around sports program its NOT in Athens. Thats what’s got DAWG lovers so upset. That and you lose 2 games or 3 a year in FB. Hang your SEC East banners high. In Gainesville they dont have room to put them up nor would they. #ina
thenstheyknow
We dont care what a Dawg Fan thinks about anything. Once UGA starts kirbying this fall you all will run and hide like you have for going on 4 decades.
NashvilleGator, I absolutely challenge that comment. UGA and UF are neck-and-neck top public universities per USN&WR (the gold standard of school rankings). For the 2018 enrollees, both schools averaged an ACT of 30, with an SAT score within a few points of each other. The schools are academically very similar and lead the SEC (after Vandy, of course).
And if you want to compare the two universities post-enrollment, just look at the Rhodes Scholar count: 24 for Georgia, 12 for Florida.
Before throwing out that kind of loose-cannon shade, it might behoove you to do a little fact-finding. You know, like a top student might . . .
MountainDawg, I made the comment about academics in jest. But since you seem to be serious in your challenge about academics, I will be too.
First, your “gold standard” USN&WR ranking is heavily weighted to financial value. In plain terms: The cost of attendance versus the quality of education offered.
Georgia is by all measures a good school. And one of the better public universities. But if you look at rankings that are more focused upon academic quality, regardless of tuition cost, like Forbes and the Wall Street Journal rankings, UF typically ranks far higher than Georgia.
UF has higher composite, English and math ACT scores than every other SEC school except Vanderbilt. Georgia is third. While the difference is only a point or two in each measure, a point or two is significant when the total possible score is just 36. And this difference is even more striking when you consider that UF’s enrollment is 36% larger than Georgia’s.
UF accepts 39% of applicants. Georgia accepts 49%. You pretty much need at least a 4.0 GPA to get into Florida, although it’s possible to get in on summer enrollment with a bit lower GPA.
Rhodes Scholarship totals at public universities are heavily skewed by a university’s age and historical enrollment. Enrollment at each state’s flagship university is a function of population.
Georgia had four times more population than Florida in 1900. Florida didn’t pass Georgia in population until the late 1950s. Today, Florida has twice the population of Georgia.
So that particular metric says little about a public university’s academic quality in 2019.
Look, UGA is a good public university. Let it go.
NashvilleGator, nothing to let go. I responded to your comment – which you claim was in jest, but I see no evidence of it – with a few facts. You’re the one who went into overdrive with detail.
Still, after all that, my response to your original post stands – incoming freshmen at the two schools have very similar, unarguable qualifications. As to your lengthy rationalization of Rhodes Scholarships, there’s still no comparison: since 1960 the count is still 12 to 3. Recent history is even more pronounced at 9 to 1 since 1996.
Bottom line, I raised two distinct points and they still stand.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
I’m not going to waste time explaining how some universities target and game the Rhodes nominating and application process. I’ll just say that 12 students, or 24, or 100, do not a university make.
“I’d think we did a poor job recruiting if guys were coming in and then immediately leaving.
-Dan Mullen. There you go dawgs of war posted it for you. Thanks for the 5 star btw
Thanks for picking up a future problem. UF just opened the door for another 5 star on the UGA 2020 class.
Yeah, Georgia didn’t really need any of the eight players who entered the transfer portal this year. That’s why they recruited them. Just so they could transfer.
I find it hilarious to see Gator fans going into depth about their academic prowess. How pitiful. How many Rhodes scholars are playing ball in the SEC? This isnt the Princeton Review website. Its about SEC football and how Florida football has completely lost its mojo. The Gator players know it, the coaches know it and the fans know it. Their rivals know it and it feels great. Florida sucking out loud in football has nothing to do with academics but about very poor choices on coaches and players. Mullen another example. Dawg fans everywhere hope his tenure is a long one
One of your fellow insecure UGA fans pursued the academic issue after it was mentioned in a joking manner. And I wouldn’t call a 10-3 season “sucking.”
I find it pathetic that Georgia fans are so preoccupied with Florida even when they should feel confident about their team. But they just can’t quite ever feel confident, can they?
If the Gators have lost so much, why are you wasting your time on the Gator section of SDS?
Dare we speak of Georgia’s deepest, darkest fear? That even with your up-tick in recruiting, you still won’t have what it takes to win a national championship before the Gators win their fourth. Gee, that must just drive you crazy.
Actually I followed a link about Brinton Cox and it brought me here to this chat site. Then I see the for the first time the current tortured state of the Gator mind. Unable to accept the new reality. To delusional Gator fans Fla sux only cuz everyone else is cheating or giving away cash. Seriously, listening to Gator blame everyone but themselves for being losers reminds me of a Hillary Clinton post election speaking tour. Look in the mirror.
Listen gators………UGA simply felt sorry for y’all not having a single 5 STAR. So we sent you one. Well we also sent you another problem. So say thank you or f?ck you. Either way, now you have 1 5 star and another problem!!!!! Deal with it. Glad he is gone for my part!!!! He will fit in perfectly at Florida. He is lazy and a pothead!!!!
King Negan
Bluntforcetrauma hit on a UGA sore spot. We are talking football here and right now UGA had upper hand. But for sports overall we know where we stand which is that we pretty much suck in everything else. Not sure but I think UGA was 7th or 8th in SEC overall which is horrible and inexcusable. That was even with our baseball team flaring up for once. Even our womens sports are down and that used to be a strength. How our AD McGarrity keeps his job is beyond me.
