Billy Napier continues to fill out his staff, and now he’s reportedly found an inside linebackers coach from the ACC.

Former UNC defensive coordinator Jay Bateman is headed to Florida as the inside linebackers coach, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported. He’s the former DC at Army and Ball State. Bateman’s expected hire means Napier has filled out his initial on-field coaching staff.

Bateman was fired at North Carolina earlier this month after the Tar Heels struggled this season, including when they allowed 38 points and 543 yards in a loss to South Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Bateman spent the past 3 seasons with the Tar Heels.

The Tar Heels finished 105th nationally in points allowed (32.1 per game) and 94th in yards allowed (418 per game). Bateman shared coordinator duties with Tommy Thigpen but was UNC’s primary defensive playcaller.

In each of the last 3 seasons, UNC ranked outside the top 65 of the FBS in ESPN’s defensive efficiency metric.

However, Bateman was a key part of North Carolina’s recruiting efforts, especially with defensive prospects. Bateman served as the lead recruiter for several prized commits: Keeshawn Silver, Desmond Evans, RaRa Dillworth and Ja’Qurious Conley, among others, ACC Sports reported.
