After losing at Missouri in overtime on Saturday, Florida fans and college football observers were left wondering if embattled coach Dan Mullen would survive the weekend.

He didn’t, as news broke early Sunday afternoon that Mullen was out as the Gators head coach after compiling a 34-15 record in 4 seasons in Gainesville. He was just 13-10 in the last 2 seasons, however.

Mullen will not coach Florida in its regular season finale against Florida State next Saturday.

That task will fall to Greg Knox, who was announced by the school Sunday as the Gators’ interim head coach.

Knox served this season as Florida’s running backs coach and special teams coordinator.

The Texas native came to Gainesville with Mullen from Mississippi State in 2018.

He has 24 years of SEC coaching experience at Ole Miss, Auburn, Mississippi State, and Florida, and in 2017 he led the Bulldogs to a win over Louisville in the Taxslayer Bowl.

If Knox hopes to coach the 2021 Gators in a bowl game this season, he’ll need to beat the Seminoles on Saturday, as Florida is 5-6 on the season.
