Steve Spurrier has a game that comes up regularly when the Florida-Georgia week rolls around.

And he was asked about it again this week on WRUF. It’s the 1995 game when Florida played Georgia in Athens because of construction at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

It’s a favorite for Florida fans, who remember that the Gators played in Athens for the first time in 63 years with a 6-0 record and a No. 3 ranking, and Georgia was 5-3.

Florida QB Danny Wuerffel passed for 5 touchdowns and threw for 242 yards in just under 3 quarters to give the Gators a huge lead.

As the margin swelled, here’s how Spurrier explained the famous label for this game: “Half a hundred.”

“I didn’t think about it until the bus ride over there,” Spurrier said. “Lawson Holland, one of our assistant coaches, was looking at the media guide or something, and we’re on the bus on the way over there. And he said, ‘Coach, nobody’s ever scored 50 between the hedges’ is the nickname of their stadium there at Georgia. He said, ‘Why don’t we do it today?’ I said, ‘Lawson, let’s worry about winning the dang game first, OK.’ So we’re sitting on 45 with about 2 or 3 minutes left, we’ve got Eric Kresser in the game, I think he might have nudged me a little bit and said, ‘Coach, we can still hit 50 if you want to.’ So we called a play and got down there, and Travis McGriff ran a little 79 B out I think it was or something. So Kresser threw him a touchdown. It was about a minute and a half or 2 minutes left in the game, and we had all the backups in there. So if they wanted to get mad about that, that’s OK.'”

The final score was 52-17 against Ray Goff’s Georgia team.
