5-star Louisiana RB John Emery commits to Georgia over LSU, Alabama
Kirby Smart continues to amass an unbelievable amount of 5-star talent in Athens. The latest big-time Bulldog commitment comes from Destrehan, La. running back John Emery. He announced his commitment Sunday by tweeting a “committed” graphic featuring a photo of him in UGA’s black jersey sporting No. 4.
Listed at 5-11, 206 pounds, Emery is rated the No. 2 running back, No. 4 Louisiana product and No. 31 overall national recruit by the 247Sports Composite. With Emery onboard, the fifth 5-star in the class, UGA’s national recruiting ranking jumped from No. 5 to No. 3.
It’s no surprise that an elite talent like Emery had his pick of big-time programs. Emery’s SEC offers included Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee.
The Georgia backfield will be loaded for years to come, but Emery’s sophomore season highlights show why he’ll likely compete for touches from the time he gets on campus.

Dell McGee strikes again!!
Welcome to Athens and Georgia young man. You will never regret this decision and you will be a Georgian the rest of your life, even if you live in Bum….Egypt. Have a great senior season and come ready for great achievements.
All right! Here’s hoping his upcoming season and the All American games can bump him to the no. 1 RB. It’ll take some doing. I think this guarantees Trey Sanders to Alabama. LSU will probably go full force for Noah Cain now.
Welcome home John Emery! Welcome to RBU!
Nobody can sell Athens like Kirby. This is fun.
I honestly didn’t expect this one, so I’m pleasantly surprised. Kirby is
loaded at RB for at least 3 more years, so he’s doing a great job selling the RB by Committee system. Backs are getting smarter about their college workload and how that can impact an NFL career.
And the thing is, Kirby is just really starting to get his feet under him with recruiting as a HC. That first year and a half on the job was a whirlwind in every category. Now that things have settled, his system is in place, the team is all on board and pointed in the right direction, he can truly show what he’s got on the recruiting trail – and that seems to be a LOT!
Smart kid, not keeping it in-state and committing to LSU. The dude wants to surround himself with nationally-elite talent and get rings. No one can hate on him for that. This reminds me of when Cam Akers was torn between Ole Miss and FSU. While I wanted him to stay in-state and commit to Ole Miss, I couldn’t shy away from the fact that he would have been an idiot to commit to Ole Miss in the situation they were in. The NCAA cloud was there and all signs pointed towards the Death Penalty for Ole Miss. Not wanting to be a part of that is very understandable even if he would have been our starting RB on Day 1, just as Emery would have been the starting RB at LSU on Day 1. There’s no competition at RB at LSU which means he could be a 3 year 1,000 yarder and go in Round 1 of 2022. Wise choice, choosing UGA.
3 year 1000 yarder? That is only if LSU can find someone to block for him and his career in the the league will be “Not For Long” if his body is beaten severely after 3 years of running behind a subpar line.
I highly doubt this one sticks. It came out of nowhere and the kid would be behind Swift, Cook, and White. I think he ends up at MSU or LSU, depending on which team has the better season.
While it certainly isn’t over until he signs the dotted line come February, behind in a loaded backfield isn’t a turnoff for RBs nowadays who want to keep some tread on their tires for when they can actually make some money off of their skills. Also he might be making a decision based off of the ability to compete for championships.
Being fourth certainly isn’t a turn on either. Kids may not mind being second, or maybe third, but fourth isn’t exciting. Who is he supposed to pass?
I agree with you LSUSMC. A winning team won’t get a RB to the NFL. He can’t wait until he’s a Senior to put in 1,000 yards. He needs to get a lot of reps and early.
It is a constant competition at UGA. Who’s knows who will earn what spot on the RB team. They all have to compete in practice to earn a spot to start. It is Running Back University. The stable will continue to build. There will be one more RB coming aboard to commit for this class.
Running Back University? They had a great stable of RB’s this past season and seem stacked for the future, but I believe UGA has all of one back on an active roster that has actually gained a yard in the nfl. One. That’s not RBU, at least not yet.
Dude, what are you talking about?!?!? UGA has always been known as RBU (Running Back University). Just thought I would clarify that for you.!
You can call yourself RBU if you like, but I couldn’t find a single independent site that did. Can you? Self proclaimed is not overly credible.
“Being fourth certainly isn’t a turn on either.”
That’s probably the stupidest thing I’ve heard. Herrien was 4th or 5th last year. Also, you know there’s a thing call redshirting, right? Plus, I’m sure they can work him in somehow. The kid wants to play for UGA so he committed. It doesn’t mean he has to post 1,000 yards his first 2 years.
That’s why you competeand he wouldnt be 4th long.they all will have 2yrs to really shine.

You have much to learn young grasshopper LSUSMC.
So you couldn’t find an independent site. I thought not. Keep self proclaiming.

Bleacher Report
…shall I go on?
Bleacher report has UGA 7th. None of those other sites has you ranked first either. Go on? You never started.
Its hilarious reading fans of two team who are DEFINITELY not RBU tell another program who has a legitimate stake to RBU tell them they arent – LSU and Barn yall are cute hahaha now sit down and let the grown folk talk!!!
I’m not talking about rankings. We’re talking about UGA being called RBU. I like how you divert and avoid the issue. Oh well, see you Baton Rouge.
^in
Bama 718…. What’s hilarious is a UGA fan pretending to be a Bama fan…… You’ve already made it clear who you pull for. You should lose tag.
you guys need to stop “hating on the kid”. Sony Michel was 4th in line when he arrived in Athens and he had a 1000 yard season as a Soph & as a Sr. Nick Chubb rushed for over 700 yds & 1000 yds as Soph & Sr during the same seasons. Michel is during just fine and his body has not endured a great deal of punishment & stress. The kid would be fine also.
I’m still waiting on @DoubleDouche to back-up this RBU claim? tick-tock-tick-tock …
I would expect a little more coming from an “Awe-bun” guy. Oh well, see you in Athens.
They have had a good run of RBs lately, but no where near the production of some other Universities over time. I guess we should have claimed Auburn as QBU after Cam. They’re delusional…
Look, we all know UGA, Alabama and Auburn will continue to have great running backs. Yes, there are some Universities that may have one good back that will rack up a lot of yards, but are they in the SEC, do they have at least 1 or 2 more backs behind them that are of that same high caliber, and do they mix passes in the play calling? (Example: Gordon from Wisconsin) It is big, physical smash-mouth football here in the SEC with top defensive fronts you have to run against. You cannot compare the RB’s of other conferences to the SEC’s.
DD33, that lil’ Cow College down there off 85 has produced a 1000 yd rusher 9 consecutive years and 11 diff players have gone 1000+ since 2009. We don’t claim RBU status … but if that’s the topic of the day, AU has a front row seat in that convo
No, you highly HOPE it doesn’t stick. In the meantime, marinate in the resentment. Emery and Tongue are only the first of a long line of Louisiana prospects UGA will take in the years to come. GO DAWGS!
Tongue wasn’t even offered by LSU. I never said the kid would end up at LSU. MSU has a great shot at him if they have a good season. This call was completely unexpected. People will get in his ear and he is just as likely to change his commitment as not. You guys must have not much confidence in Cook or White if you are this hyper about this kid. Too funny.
Competition breeds excellence. When Chubb showed up at UGA he was 4th on the depth chart. Emery may believe in his own skill set to outwork anyone there. Don’t be jealous of the ever overflowing stable of backs UGA is able to put up every year. Cook, white, emery, swift, Holyfield, even herrien would be the best LSU RB this year or next.
I’m not sayin he won’t change his mind, not unlike Toniel Carter who changed his mind after Chubb and Michel stayed. Time will tell but for now he is a UGA committ. Sorry.
Since 2013 we lost players like DE-Robert Nkemdiche (5*), DT-Montravius Adams (5*), DE-Carl Lawson (5*), S-Von Bell (5*), ILB-Raekwon McMillan (5*), DTQB-Deshaun Watson (5*), OT-Mitch Hyatt (5*), OT-Chuma Edoga (5*) , DT-Derrick Brown (5*), DT-Aubrey Solomon (5*) and DE-Chris Hinton (5*). That’s 11 five stars that we needed badly that abandoned the state since 2013 so we understand what it feels like to lose quality players.
I didn’t see this coming. Welcome aboard John!
Glad he picked uga over bama
Bama will probably be getting Trey Sanders so I wouldn’t celebrate too much.
Yes, Bama will get Sanders since we got Emery.
poor kid
Seriously, WTF are you doing commenting????
Remember, unless you are lead DAWG the scenery never changes.
I know right? Winning the East for the next 4-5 years is gonna suck! He definitely should have gone to USCjr where he can be proud of a 9-3 season and the Gator Bowl.
week 2. the East belongs to SC
See you in Columbia. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. You should know that since you are one.
Does anybody know how to send a check to Orgeron, he’s doing a fabulous job? Hopefully he stays at LSU for a decade.
WarPuppy, slow your roll. A loaded 2017 team (Fromm, Michel, Chubb, Roquan, Wynn, Lorenzo Carter) with CKS at the helm didn’t prevent UGA from getting boat-raced in Jordan-Hare last year. That same $hit-show can happen again on Nov 3. Don’t hyperventilate just yet; it’s barely August.
How many games did Auburn win away from Jordan-Hare? We can see what these teams look like in 2019 before I get too worried about losing to Auburn.
Hey “Awe-bun”, U C F.
DblDouche, the loss to UCF does’t keep me up at night.
See you in Athens.
Good for auburn for shutting down our offense in the 1st game but what happened to that great defense in the 2nd game? They were as bad as our offense in jordan-hare (well, almost as bad).
Our young head coach said – “losses don’t haunt me, they motivate me”.
I’m the SECCG and Peach Bowl; we lost. That wasn’t my point. UGA didn’t show up at J-H last year. NO ONE expected a blow out. I was there and I couldn’t believe what I was watching. UGA was a beast team last year. If you told me the final would be 40-17, I would’ve said “damn, are we really gonna lose that bad”.
UGA will be very good again this season … but whatever you guys ate for breakfast on Nov 11, it clearly didn’t agree with you. Big picture it didn’t matter – you still advanced to Atlanta.
Baton Rouge is a hostile place to play … won’t matter if LSU is 0-6, they’ll be ready when you roll into to town
We don’t roll. That would be your nemesis, Alabama. Get over it. Your coming to Athens and and going to Tuscaloosa. Again, we will see you in Athens.
^You’re
Gotta love auto spell check.
When you look more closely, it’s not that much of a head-scratcher. By the time he suits up for this first game Holyfield will have played 3 years and Swift 2. White and Cook will be a year ahead, but Zamir is coming off ACL surgery and you just never know how a player will respond to that. By his second season he could be ready to be the feature back.
Hey, it’s worked like a charm at Bama for years. Unlike at QB, being part of quality depth at RB does not mean you won’t get in the spotlight. Also, who wouldn’t want to run behind the insane O-line Pittman has built for years to come?
Some of these comments are interesting. There no negatives for John Emery picking RBU over any other team.
Top 3 O-Line. Any top back would love to run behind Pittman’s line. Yessir.
He won’t be worn down to the nub at Ga, like he would be on many other teams. Smart recruits, especially RB’s realize the benefit of sharing the load. The NFL would rather take a back who’s proven and hasn’t been driven into the ground by a coach who can only offer immediate playing time as an incentive.
Kirby will produce a top 10 defense, so there will be no need to outscore every team in a Big-12 style offense. Less wear and tear.
Nobody is out-recruiting Ga. Championships are in the near future.
He will get a better education at UGA than almost any other SEC school.
I very much like all your points, Tim. You are spot on for every thing you said.
Actually #2 in the country with 5 5*s to go with last recruiting seasons 5 5*s. Closing fast on Bama in recruiting this season, could very well end up with the #1 class again. Hey it’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!
Id have to say Bama has a very strong claim to RBU….since they have had 2 Heisman Trophy winners in the last 10 years! Wow how we forget!
