When Mel Tucker left Athens to take over the Colorado program back in December, Kirby Smart was forced to search for the man that would become his second defensive coordinator in Athens. In the end, Smart didn’t have to look very far.

After only one season in Athens, Smart has decided to promote outside linebackers coach Dan Lanning as his next defensive coordinator. The news was first reported by Seth Emerson of The Athletic. Prior to landing a job in Athens, Lanning served as inside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Memphis. He also served on Alabama’s staff in 2015 as a graduate assistant.

Georgia has also announced Glenn Schumann, the team’s former inside linebackers coach, has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator.

The Bulldogs have also added additional titles to these assistants: (receivers coach) Cortez Hankton passing game coordinator, (running backs coach) Dell McGee running game coordinator and (offensive line coach) Sam Pittman associate head coach.
