Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who has been suspended for issues with the local media, may lose more than just a preseason game.

According to NBC Sports, Ramsey may lose the financial protections for 2018 and 2019 because of the suspension.

The former Florida State standout signed a four-year, $23.5 million deal and has a salary of $2.572 million in 2018 and $3.634 million in 2019. The Jaguars have typically removed offset language from top-10 rookie contracts, which apparently leaves them the ability to avoid those future guarantees.

Former Georgia star and Bears rookie Roquan Smith has been engaged in a holdout this offseason that centers around this possible monetary loss due to suspension. The Bears have refused to give up the right to reclaim some of Smith’s guaranteed bonus if he is suspended for an on-field violation that isn’t necessarily a football play.

Smith is the only unsigned player in the 2018 NFL Draft class.

This Ramsey situation has served as a cautionary tale for Smith’s camp in the midst of their contractual negotiations. Ramsey has already shown that he’s one of the best young cornerbacks in the game, but if that had not been the case, the Jaguars could have now released him and saved several million dollars.
