Georgia is halfway home to an undefeated season after a 41-13 win over Vanderbilt Saturday night, raising its record to 6-0 and 4-0 in the SEC. They rolled up a season-high 560 yards and made a lot of big plays on defense.

Guys made plays all night, and even though there were a few hiccups along the way, it was a still an impressive performance.

Here is what I liked — and what I didn’t like — about Georgia’s victory over Vanderbilt:

What I liked

1. Welcome back, Terry Godwin

Terry Godwin has caught at least 35 balls each year during his first three seasons, but he’s been a non-factor so far this season. He had only 4 catches in the first five games. But Saturday, he had a 75-yard score and another nice 20-yard catch later. Kirby Smart was thrilled for Godwin. “Terry has worked hard every day. I have seen him work like that every week. So I thought it was big for him to get that catch, to get over the top behind that defense.”

2. Another night of sharp play from QB Jake Fromm

Jake Fromm had another efficient night. He finished 17-of-23 passing for 273 yards and 3 TDs. Playing well in the two-minute before halftime set the tone for his night. “I thought it created some momentum. I thought Jake did a great job managing the clock,” Smart said. “When you think about the fact that we did not have any timeouts, he did a good job of managing it and functioning.”  Unlike last week’s win over Tennessee, when freshman Justin Fields plays several critical snaps, this game was pretty much all in Fromm’s hands. As usual, he was very good.

3. Stepping up on defense when it matters

Georgia’s top-notch defense kept Vanderbilt out of the end zone until the very end, and that took some doing because the Commodores had three nice drives in the first half and were knocking on the door. They settled for two field goals and were stopped on 4th-and-1 when it really mattered. “It was a big play in the game,” Smart said. “They were aggressive to go for it. We have not been a good short-yardage defensive team. We have struggled to stop people on 3rd-and-1 or 2 and that has been a big emphasis for us. We need to improve on that.”

4. D’Andre Swift has his best night of the season

Georgia’s offense was humming Saturday night, posting 219 yards on the ground and 341 yards through the air and, as always, it was a balanced attack from the long list of skill-position players. It was nice to see D’Andre Swift have his biggest night of the year, rushing for 50 and catching for 49. Sharing touches has been a Georgia thing all year, which is fine, but Swift has been pretty quiet all year, especially considering what was expected at the start of the year. Saturday was a nice step in the right direction.

5. Another big kick from ‘Respect the specs’

Rodrigo Blankenship made both field goals and all five extra points, but it was his 53-yarder that got the crowd going. He’s such a fan favorite, and they loved watching him smack in a long one. It was impressive, clearing the crossbar easily. It would have been good from 60-plus.

What I didn’t like

1. Penalties add up to a problem

Regardless of the size of the win, there was one area that was a big problem, and that was with penalties. Georgia was whistled 13 times for a whopping 115 yards. It didn’t affect the outcome against Vanderbilt, but it might make a difference in a game down the road.  “Penalties continue to haunt us and it’s a lot to overcome when you make silly penalties,” Smart said. “I don’t know, we as a coaching staff have to look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘What are we doing to not reach this team from a discipline standpoint, penalty discipline.’ It’s tough. I mean, you get 20 and you give up 15, you get 10 and give up five. It’s a constant war with ourselves to overcome things, which good football teams don’t beat themselves and obviously, we tried to do all we could to beat ourselves with some really stupid, undisciplined penalties, which we’ve got to grow out of.”

2. Sloppiness still creeps in now and then

Georgia’s defense is still a top-10 unit and even Saturday night it kept Vanderbilt out of the end zone until the final two seconds. But there are still times when errors creep in, and there were a few too many against the Commodores. “We did not stop the run well defensively. They did some good things there. We definitely have to improve on that,” Smart said. “Breakdowns, you give up plays. We have to do a good job, obviously, when we give up plays, it is as much our coaching and what we are doing as it is the players. We just have to make sure they buy into it. I did think they came out with a little more energy in the second half and play a little harder as a defensive unit.”

3. Schedule really hasn’t told us much

Georgia is 6-0 and 4-0 in the SEC. They are the only unbeaten team left in the SEC East. But still, those six opponents are all unranked in the latest AP Top 25, and no one’s even in the next 10 of vote-getters. So how good are they? We’ll find out soon because their next four opponents — LSU, Florida, Kentucky and Auburn — were all ranked last week.  “Our guys continue to grow and get better. I am excited to see where this team can go as we continue to get better from here. Are we physical enough?  I don’t know. We are about to find out.”
