It was fun while it lasted.

You know, the narrative that Georgia wasn’t the cream of the crop in the SEC East. It was intriguing because it strayed from the preseason narrative and really what we saw all of last year when the Dawgs pounded division foes and moonwalked their way to Atlanta.

But yeah, that notion is all but dead. At least it should be.

That’s what we learned Saturday with what we saw in Jacksonville, and from what we saw at Missouri. Even though Georgia and Kentucky will face off in what will be billed as the SEC East title game — Kentucky clinches a trip to Atlanta with a win next week — I’m already giving the crown to the Dawgs.

Wait, what? Didn’t I see how it ended in Columbia? Isn’t Kentucky the team of destiny now after stunning the Tigers with a walk-off touchdown pass?

Yes, I did see Terry Wilson lead an improbable drive to lift the Wildcats to one of their best wins in recent memory. It was wild, storybook stuff. Bravo. I, like you, thought that game was over as soon as Mizzou made it 14-3.

But to answer my own question, no, I don’t think Kentucky is the team of destiny. At least not to beat Georgia and win the SEC East.

Georgia was vulnerable following the LSU loss, but I’m not a believer that Kentucky is the team that’s going to catch Kirby Smart’s squad off guard.

Play the disrespect card if you want, Kentucky fans. But let’s be real. As great as that defense is, the Wildcats showed Saturday just why they’re going to struggle so much against Georgia.

Basically since Kentucky waltzed into The Swamp and shocked the word, it has been completely 1-dimensional. As great as Benny Snell is, he’s not putting that team on his back and allowing Kentucky to impose its will on that Georgia defense. He’s just not. Kentucky can’t even find a quarterback who can consistently throw the ball.

One game-winning touchdown pass didn’t change the fact that Wilson was benched after struggling to lead scoring drives yet again.

I’m taking Jake Fromm to win that battle all day, every day. Perhaps some underestimated just how good Jake Fromm was after the LSU disaster. Saturday, however, was a peak Jake Fromm performance. He was calm under pressure, he came up clutch and did everything a veteran leader was supposed to do. That was against “Third and Grantham,” AKA the best blitzing defense in the SEC.

I’m not saying Fromm is going to light up the best scoring defense in the SEC on the road, but I’d argue that he stands a better chance of doing that than any quarterback the Kentucky defense has seen all year. Yeah, that includes Drew Lock.

And if Fromm can’t do the heavy lifting, Georgia has a pair of backs who can. D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield finally got the workload they deserved — a combined 32 carries for 175 yards — in Jim Chaney’s offense. With how well they played down the stretch against an elite Florida defense, this felt like Georgia finally figuring things out.

The Dawgs just played their best game of the season. They have a level that’s simply higher than anyone in the SEC East, which is why they haven’t lost a divisional game since the start of 2017. They have too much depth, too much defensive speed and too much discipline to falter against a unit with limitations like Kentucky.

Now I will say that Fromm has never beaten a top-15 team in a true road game. We saw him struggle at Auburn last year, and he played the worst game of his career at LSU a couple weeks ago.

Kentucky has earned the right to be a top-15 team. The Cats have earned the right to be playing for a division title in what’s been their best season in 4 decades. That should be celebrated and appreciated. We know it will be when Kroger Field is rocking next Saturday. It’ll be an awesome, new experience for any Kentucky fan who isn’t in their 50s.

But we’re fooling ourselves if we think that this isn’t Georgia’s division.

The team that showed up and put the game away against a battle-tested Florida squad was the Georgia we’ve been waiting all year to see (I realize that Kentucky winning at The Swamp was darn impressive, but I’d argue Florida is better now than it was 2 months ago).

Is it great to see the East actually have a November title game of sorts? Absolutely. Kentucky is an excellent team and one of the top stories in college football this year. The fact that Georgia won’t just be handed the division title is a win for the SEC as a whole. The week of buildup will be fantastic.

I know that Kentucky fans will eat up all the negativity surrounding their chances. That’s fine. I’m here for it. That’s what they should do. That’s the only chance the Wildcats have to hang with a team on Georgia’s level.

Ah, shoot. I forgot my own words.

The notion that Georgia won’t win the SEC East was buried 6 feet under on Saturday.
